Frequently Asked Questions by Educators

Q:   A child just disclosed to me that he or she has been sexually abused. What do I do?

A:   It is important that you do not question the child. Call the Department of Health and Welfare (Child Protective Services) and give them the information that you know. (Contact Numbers) It is not your job to investigate, it is your job to report the abuse and to support the child. Even if you think that this has been reported and/or investigated in the past, contact Health and Welfare. You are mandated by law to report suspected child abuse, let the investigative team decide what course of action, if any, needs to be taken.

Q:   A child in my classroom is showing some concerning behaviors. How can I know if he or she is being sexually abused?

A:   There is no way to know for sure that a child is being sexually abused, unless they directly disclose to you. If you have questions about what is normal or if there are ways to address specific sexual behaviors, contact Bright Tomorrows CAC at  232-2646 and we will do our best to answer your questions.
